She runs to her mom and climbs on top of her. Mama, with her last breathe, gently sooths Kozue, and says “Kozue, baby, I want you to be strong, me and papa will always be in your heart, go now and grow my beautiful sun flower.” She moves aside a rug that hides a trap door, and brushes Kozue’s hair from her forehead, kisses her one last time, whispers, “You are my special princess” and passes away.
Kozue lies on top of her mother, holding her tightly, never wanting to let go.
The flaming fire engulfs the house; it’s time to say her final goodbye. Quickly, she lifts the heavy trap door, crawls down until she finally makes it to the other side.
