One of the guards claim the family didn’t pay taxes; therefore, their punishment is death. Papa argues and yells, swearing that he did pay his taxes. The emperor’s guard looks in his little white book and comes across Hibiki’s name and in the space for the amount paid a big red X. Papa continues to argue, but swiftly a hand comes and punches him in the stomach. Down on both knees, Mama pleads to the guard for forgiveness and another chance to pay but it doesn’t help. The guard yanks her black hair and kisses her running tears along her cheek.
“Cheer up gorgeous, you and your husband are going to a much happier place now.” He throws her by the hair with all his strength across the tiny room. While all this was going on, a second guard beats the life out of papa. His brown eyes close and his body, in scarlet blood, lay still.
